Changing your work-life to welcome more freedom and fulfillment is a process and a journey. Here, every month, we will share stories of women who are doing it. Real stories, real transformation. This is a virtual treasure chest — full of the challenges, struggles, lessons and insights of others — which you can use to enrich your own path.

This month’s featured “woman on purpose” is Christina Sok-Cabrera, a former arts professional. She’s currently a full-time travelpreneur.

Describe the big shift you’ve made in your work-life. What led you to that change?

I’ve always wanted to be my own boss, creating my own hours, ultimately having freedom in my life to travel the world, give back, make an impact on others and live a life filled with passion and purpose.

I have a masters degree in Art History and have worked in different areas of the art world – a profession I chose out of passion. Yet this wasn’t enough for me as I always felt unsatisfied with having to work for somebody else and trading my time for money. I felt that the confines of a corporate job would never allow me to reach my full potential. In 2013, I decided to take the plunge into entrepreneurship, to be my own boss and started to build my global online business part-time while I still held a job in the art world as I needed to transition into my business. Building my own business was the best way that allows me to design my life, rather than living by default as I had done until then.

What were you most fearful of in making that change?

To be honest, the change didn’t make me fearful. In fact, I was more afraid of not going for my dreams and not making a change in my life.

How is your experience of life different now?

I feel truly alive, and I am thankful for this.

I absolutely love every aspect of my life, while everything I do is much more joyful as I now live full time.

When you create a life you love and you are happy, you love the life you live.

What’s your biggest concern in this moment?

I guess my biggest concern is that I don’t have enough time on this planet to do, see, accomplish everything that my heart desires.

When you live to the fullest, you really want to maximize everything and you become hyper conscious about time and not wanting to waste it.

What are you most excited about going forward?

I am most excited about everything my future holds. The future hasn’t been brighter than it is now. Being the CEO of my life, I have never felt more in control over my destiny than ever before. Fortunately, I don’t have to rely on other people to dictate where I am going anymore. It is a beautiful thing to own your life and work hard towards your dreams.

Most of all, I am so excited about being the best version of myself – i.e. doing work that is fulfilling and meaningful, impacting the lives of others and creating a legacy for my family through the work that I do. I am not only pursuing my dreams but creating something much bigger than just myself, and that is what keeps me up at night with excitement.

If you could travel back in time, what’s one piece of advice that your current self wishes that you could tell your former self?

Don’t worry about what other people think, just do you.

This is Why New Year’s Resolutions Don’t Work

Many will use it to look back on our experiences and lessons from the past year. And many will spend time dreaming and planning around what we’d like to achieve, feel, create or become in the year ahead.
